Sharing MBs is becoming increasingly popular at KPN
KPN users share many terabytes with children or housemates every month
About nine years ago, KPN was the first telecom provider in the market to introduce MB sharing. This makes it possible for everyone with a mobile subscription at the same address to share data with each other. Since then, MB sharing has steadily grown into an increasingly popular activity among KPN customers, from entire families to residents of a student house.
A large proportion of KPN customers with multiple subscriptions at the same address now use this functionality. It is particularly popular among families. “Dad, I'm out of 4G, can you give me new data” and “Hey, Mum, put some more 5G on my phone” is a frequent refrain among families whose provider is KPN. It is especially ideal for families with young children, so everyone can go online when they want, and parents can keep control of the amount of data being used. But residents of student houses are also making use of it.
KPN has seen the number of MB sharers increase significantly in recent years. The introduction of automatic sharing and the arrival of Unlimited bundles that allow you to share 50GB a month has further boosted the popularity. Not only is the number of users rising, but also the number of MBs shared each time, in line with the annual growth in data traffic. Sharing 2000 MB or 5000 MB at a time is the most popular among our customers, but larger and smaller amounts, either as a one-off or as a monthly occurrence, are also finding favor.
Seasonal effects are well reflected in data sharing. For example, KPN sees a clear peak in the summer months of July and August while December is the month in which data is shared the least often with family members or housemates. This is easily explained. The MBs that are shared in the summer period can also be used during holidays abroad (Roam-like-Home). And in the winter months we obviously stay indoors more and connect to the Wi-Fi more frequently.
