United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

Progress for humans and the environment

KPN contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations. These are 17 goals for sustainable development in force until 2030. We’re focused on the three goals where we can have the most impact.

The United Nations (UN) has drawn up 17 Sustainable Development Goals. These are goals for global sustainable development. They replace the Millennium Goals that expired in 2015. The new objectives are in force from 2015 to 2030. KPN believes in progress, for humans and for the environment. That’s why we’ve committed to these UN goals.

KPN is focusing on the three goals where we can have the most impact with our products and services.

09. Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.

Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation.
Development for the future requires a resilient infrastructure. Networks that can handle all possible social developments. From innovative transport to smart buildings, from online service to objects communicating with each other via the Internet of Things.

The KPN network is inextricably linked with the Netherlands and is Dutch to the core. We take our responsibility by providing the best ICT infrastructure, today and tomorrow. A network that we’re continually maintaining and improving through innovations and investments.

11. Sustainable cities and communities

Make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable.

Across the world, ever more people are moving to the city. Statistics Netherlands (CBS) predicts that cities in the Netherlands will continue to grow too. One of the Sustainable Development Goals is to structure these large cities in a sustainable way: safely, smartly and with a focus on people and the environment. Technological innovation is the binding factor in the city of the future.

KPN is working on Smart Cities: smart cities that are much nicer to live in thanks to technology. In Amsterdam and Rotterdam, we’ve worked on street lighting that only switches on when someone is in the vicinity, garbage containers that signal when they are full and parking spaces that indicate online when they are free. This makes the city more pleasant, cleaner and more efficient.

12. Sustainable consumption and production

By 2030, achieve the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources

Economic growth and development require the production of goods and services that improve the quality of life. Sustainable growth and development require that we ‘produce more with less’.

Within KPN we’re helping our customers be more sustainable and more environmentally friendly. What’s more, we’re continually reviewing our own organization. We’re very aware that our business activities have an impact on the planet. The manufacture of KPN devices requires raw materials and we’re one of the largest energy consumers in the Netherlands. KPN let produce equipment for which raw materials are needed and we are a Dutch’s biggest energy consumers. We want our network activities almost completely circular in 2025.
