What to do when a child is excluded online
As part of the #BetterInternet campaign about online exclusion, KPN, together with partners Helpwanted, De Kindertelefoon, Stop Pesten Nu, and Dr. Remco Spithoven (Lecturer in Online Resilience at Saxion University of Applied Sciences), has developed an interactive information module. In these videos, we explain how to deal with online exclusion, both from the perspective of parents and children.
"Online exclusion has the same painful consequences as other forms of exclusion: it causes anxiety, sadness, depressive symptoms, and it affects self-confidence and group dynamics," says Dr. Remco Spithoven.
On September 12, the ‘Everyone Except’ campaign was launched. In this campaign, we raise awareness about online exclusion. Within the campaign, we offer a lesson package for secondary schools. We are now adding this interactive information module to it. Recent research from Helpwanted shows that one in four young people (ages 10-20) is excluded online monthly. The research also shows that nearly one in three young people sometimes feels abandoned by adults when it comes to online exclusion. Parents often do not realize how often it occurs (67%), and young people do not know who to turn to if they are excluded online (41%). Therefore, there is a high need to provide parents and young people with tools to tackle the problem together.
How does the information module work?
What can be done if a child is excluded online? How can exclusion be prevented? What are the steps if someone experiences it themselves? Experts provide clear answers to these and many other questions in short videos, as well as practical advice. There are also personal stories from young people who have experienced this themselves and the short film “Everyone Except,” featuring the song by S10. Marieke Snoep, responsible for the Consumer Market and a member of KPN's Board of Directors, explains why KPN finds #BetterInternet so important. Visitors can easily click through to the topics that are relevant to them.
