‘Verstappen-effect’ on fastest mobile network of the Netherlands

The Grand Prix on the Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi that gave Max Verstappen the F1 World Championship was clearly visible on the fastest mobile network of the Netherlands. Many F1 fans watched the race via KPN 4G and 5G. During the race, which began at 2 p.m., there was up to 60% more mobile download traffic than on a normal Sunday afternoon. The peak was at the time of the thrilling last lap, when Max Verstappen finally managed to beat his title rival Lewis Hamilton.

Not only did the race cause extra pressure on the mobile network, but also millions of people watched the thrilling denouement via the fixed network and TV channels of KPN. The race was made available for all customers to watch, so the live broadcast drew many millions of viewers.

Next year, streaming service Viaplay will broadcast Formula 1; KPN has entered into a partnership for that purpose. Starting in March 2022, KPN customers can add a Viaplay subscription to their TV, internet or entertainment bundle; this will make F1 available to 3.6 million households across the country.
