KPN exempts customers in the North Sea from additional roaming costs

Starting next week, KPN customers can call and use the internet in the North Sea at the same advantageous rates as on the mainland. Just like in the rest of the EU, there are no separate roaming charges for the North Sea area anymore. KPN customers, including users of Simyo and Youfone, are the first in the Netherlands to benefit from this new arrangement. 

Since 2017, calling, texting, and using the internet in EU countries has been just as affordable as in the Netherlands. Until now, the North Sea area was excluded from these Roam Like Home agreements, which meant that users at sea often had to pay high costs for mobile services. Those who accidentally had roaming activated could face significant charges.

Thanks to a renewed strategic partnership with Tampnet, provider of mobile offshore services, KPN is the first in the Netherlands to eliminate these extra costs at sea. This is not only beneficial for customers who occasionally find themselves at sea, but especially for Dutch offshore workers on platforms, ships, and wind farms. The roaming that Tampnet provides in the North Sea area will now fall under the Roam Like Home arrangement at KPN.

Innovation at sea
The renewed collaboration between KPN and Tampnet not only offers advantages for consumers but also opens up new possibilities for businesses. With these new agreements, it is not only more cost-effective to develop services that utilize mobile connectivity in the North Sea area, but it is also easier to make the services work together between the networks of KPN and Tampnet. Think of drones used for inspections of wind turbines and ships, or to transport goods and materials more quickly between land and sea. This marks an important step for KPN towards smart and efficient innovations in the offshore sector.

First on the KPN network
Affordable calling and internet usage from the North Sea area will be available for all mobile customers of KPN, Simyo, and Youfone starting November 1. Other providers using the KPN network will also benefit from this new arrangement.
