Gold record for Piece of Me
MEAU and KPN scooping up international awards too
Singer MEAU was a guest on De 538 Ochtendshow this morning. DJs Tim, Rick, Niels and Florentien surprised her live on air with a golden record for 'Stukje van Mij'. Written in collaboration with KPN, the song is about how someone feels when intimate images of them are shared without their consent. The song was in the top 50 for 16 weeks and has had 15 million streams on Spotify.
MEAU’s initial reaction? “Wow, how great!”. “I wrote 'Stukje van Mij' (Piece of Me) in collaboration with KPN after hearing the personal stories of six really brave young people who had had their naked images shared without their consent. The song and video tell of the consequences, the shame and the feelings of guilt experienced in situations like this. KPN and I both want to spread the song’s important message as far and wide as possible: ‘Think before you forward someone’s images to anyone else.’ I’m very proud of the impact this song has had and grateful for the appreciation this golden record represents.”
Stukje van Mij & international success
The golden record isn’t the only award that 'Stukje van Mij' has won. At the end of last month, the campaign launched to accompany the song won a Grand Prix at Cannes Lions, the world’s most prestigious advertising festival. The international jury particularly applauded the fact that KPN is encouraging Dutch society to change its views on ‘online shaming’.
Since the release of 'Stukje van Mij', hundreds of secondary schools throughout the Netherlands have added lessons about online shaming (and the video created by MEAU and KPN) to the curriculum. “There’s never been a campaign with such a broad reach before: from the kitchen table to the classroom. MEAU deserves her golden record because she has found a very special way to highlight this sensitive subject. That’s important because talking about this issue is the first step towards finding a solution to it”, comments Bartho Boer, Director Brand, Communication and CSR at KPN. “We will soon be launching new initiatives to make the internet a little safer and more socially aware for everyone. Our mission for a better internet isn’t over yet.”
