KPN to offer gigabyte speeds on fiber optics network

Summary

At the beginning of next year KPN will introduce internet speeds of 1 Gigabit per second (1 Gbps) on its fiber optic network. As from March 2020, 1 Gbps will gradually become commercially available via the KPN network to all households with a fiber optic connection. The 1 Gbps internet speed will be made available in March to around 1.5 million addresses with a fiber optic connection in the major conurbations Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, The Hague and Eindhoven, and in dozens of other places.

“It’s great that we can give our customers access to a superfast gigabit connection,” says Babak Fouladi, Chief Technology and Digital Officer at KPN. “We will continue to provide top-quality broadband services and to invest in fiber optics until deep into the 21st century so as to ensure that the Netherlands has a secure and fast digital network that meets future requirements as well.”

In the next few years KPN will roll out fiber optics throughout the country, investing in the latest technology. In addition, fiber optic is the most sustainable method: the fiber optic cable sends a light signal, not an electric signal, and that uses much less electricity than other cables and networks. In the coming years, data growth will continue to grow enormously, not only as a result of more intensive internet use and the increasing number of devices, but also due to gaming, virtual reality and artificial intelligence. All these developments are possible thanks to fiber optics.

The new speed will be available to consumers and to business and wholesale customers of KPN. KPN’s private and small business customers with a fiber optic connection can purchase the new speed via the MijnKPN environment. This development will also be integrated into the offerings of KPN Business Market services KPN EEN MKB and Smart Combinations.
