Port of Moerdijk is building the port of the future together with KPN

Port of Moerdijk and KPN are going to build a corporate fiber and 5G network. In just a few years, the Moerdijk port and industrial estate, including the planned Logistics Park, will be equipped with the best mobile and fiber infrastructure. Today, both parties are announcing that they have signed a unique agreement. Never before has both fiber and 5G been installed for an entire area. A collaboration that will continue to build a strong digital port in the coming 20 years. A port of the future.

The new partnership between the port authority and KPN includes the expansion of a Fiber to the Office fiber network in the existing area and construction in the Logistics and Industrial Park planned for development. It also involves the expansion and installation of mobile masts for a strong 5G network. This creates countless opportunities in the port, enabling the port authority and the companies in the area to be at the forefront of the digital transformation.

New possibilities
The port authority’s investment in the infrastructure for mobile telecom and data traffic means that extra range, reliability, and speed for 4G and 5G can be achieved sooner. This provides advantages for companies using this network for classic mobile internet, calling, and especially for new, advanced possibilities. Applications such as Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV), the use of autonomous robots, augmented reality, and drone inspections. In addition, the camera network in the port and industrial estate will be renewed in the coming years and equipped with smart cameras. A major step forward for security on the site. This requires the urgent expansion of the fiber network.

Connectivity as the basis
KPN and the Moerdijk Port Authority have a long history and partnership with each other. Ferdinand van den Oever, Director of the Port Authority: “The basis of our port is connectivity. We connect customers to the world. This connectivity has been expanded and improved over the years. One of the ambitions is to further strengthen and digitalize our modalities and infrastructure. For us and our companies, so that the Port of Moerdijk remains the hub of sustainable logistics and the process industry in the Flemish-Dutch Delta. That’s what we’re doing it for.”

Unique agreement
Anja de Vos-Biemans, Regional Director South at KPN: “The Port of Moerdijk is of great importance for the region. We will be investing in the port’s digital future for the next 20 years. We’re doing this with the construction of both fiber and 5G, a unique and future-proof approach that ensures the port has a leading position in the field of mobile telecom and data traffic. In this way, we’re creating opportunities for entrepreneurs and the further digitalization of the port contributes to their success.”
