Party time at Christmas dinners for seniors at Dutch Eredivisie football clubs
Minister Bruno Bruins attends KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds Christmas dinner at ADO Den Haag
Poached pears at ADO, a fillet steak at Feyenoord? Hundreds of lonely elderly people and other vulnerable groups are celebrating Christmas this year at an Eredivisie club. Bruno Bruins, Minister for Medical Care and Sport, and KPN CEO Joost Farwerck joined the dinner at ADO Den Haag.
This year, the KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds is pulling out all the stops and, in cooperation with various foundations and care homes, is inviting people for an unforgettable Christmas dinner. The Christmas dinners are facilitated by 850 KPN staff members who are participating as volunteers, sitting down at the table for a chat or dressing up as Santa. The KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds is an initiative of KPN, lead sponsor of the Eredivisie.
A Christmas dinner has been organized for a total of 850 elderly people at 17 Eredivisie clubs. Those invited include care home residents from the region, most of whom are being picked up by the Eredivisie club’s team bus for this special Christmas outing. In addition to a delicious dinner, these unforgettable Christmas parties feature entertainment in the form of a show and a quiz. At many of the clubs a club icon will be present at the party too: football legends such as Willy van de Kerkhof, Kees Kist, Lex Schoenmaker or Foppe de Haan, for example.
KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds is dedicated to combating loneliness and these dinners contribute to that goal. For more than 12 years the fund, along with social organizations, has been facilitating projects to reduce the feeling of loneliness experienced by vulnerable people and to prevent them from getting into social isolation. Mark Versteegen, director of the KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds, explains: “With Christmas just around the corner it’s important to remember that not everyone is able to celebrate the festive season with loved ones and enjoy a festive meal together. That’s why KPN Mooiste Contact Fonds is organizing these Christmas dinners at Eredivisie clubs across the country; it means we can invite local people in vulnerable situations to come and celebrate Christmas with us.“
The first Christmas dinner took place on Monday, November 25 in the Fortuna Sittard stadium, and the last in the series is in the Johan Cruijff Arena on Tuesday, December 17. The video was recorded at the Christmas dinner on Wednesday, December 11 in the ADO Den Haag stadium.
