KPN accelerates fiber optic rollout in The Hague

Summary

KPN will speed up its rollout of fiber optic in The Hague. By the end of 2021, at least 80,000 households in different districts of The Hague will be connected to KPN’s open network. This is part of KPN’s strategy to accelerate the rollout of fiber optic throughout the Netherlands and for the large-scale installation of this future-proof technology. KPN has already installed fiber optic in Benoordenhout and Ypenburg and it will begin work in the Regentessekwartier in early July.

Spread across the Netherlands, KPN expects to be active in more than 50 areas simultaneously by the end of this year. 'KPN is working hard on the Netherlands’ digital highway so that customers can experience the full potential of the gigabit society,' says Joost Steltenpool, Fiber Optic Program Manager at KPN. 'This means that in the coming years, we will continue to install fiber optic in the Netherlands on a large scale, in The Hague and in many other Dutch municipalities.'

Society is increasingly digitizing, and customers are placing ever higher demands on their fixed internet connection. That’s why KPN is speeding up its mass rollout of fiber optic throughout the Netherlands. The quality of the current connection and demographic factors are key considerations in accelerating the rollout of fiber optic in the Netherlands.

Acceleration of fiber optic rollout in The Hague

KPN invests 1.1 billion euros annually in its digital infrastructure. The rollout of fiber optic in The Hague’s Regentessekwartier, announced in March this year, is the start of scaling up the rollout in The Hague. By the end of 2021, at least 80,000 households in The Hague will be connected to KPN’s open network. With this, KPN is continuing the rollout of fiber optic in the administrative capital, with the Benoordenhout and Ypenburg neighborhoods already connected.

Working together

KPN is not the only company installing fiber optic in the Netherlands, but it sets itself apart from other initiatives by being the only party engaged in the mass installation of fiber optic in the country. The market for constructing connection networks is increasingly competitive, which means that companies come across each other when installing fiber optic connections. Wherever other parties are also active, KPN is open to cooperating in the installation in order to minimize any nuisance to the municipality and its residents caused by excavation work.
