JADS and KPN start joint PhD research

Summary

Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) and KPN Data & Analytics are going to conduct joint research on the framework within which it is possible to use advanced, predictive models to improve services for customers in a safe and reliable way.

The coming 4.5 years JADS and KPN Data & Analytics will conduct research on applying transparent, predictive models. Data science, decision-making, privacy and compliance will form the central themes of this research. As from the third quarter of 2017, JADS scientists will work together with KPN Data & Analytics to carry out four PhD research trajectories in these areas, the results of which will be used in practice.

"Society as a whole is becoming increasingly connected and that means an increasing volume of data is available. This data brings with it many great opportunities, but also raises questions on issues such as privacy and safety of the information"

Arjan van den Born, Academic Director at JADS

JADS is the joint answer of the Technical University of Eindhoven and Tilburg University to the strongly increasing demand for experts who can improve decision-making processes within organizations, based on big data and a multi-disciplinary approach. Data science is all about technology (mathematics, statistics and computer science), but always within the context of domain expertise on the one hand and social, ethical and legal issues on the other. KPN Data & Analytics is the department within KPN that, based on available data, draws up reports and analyses and develops customer insights that help the organization in improving its services.

Academic Director of JADS, Arjan van den Born, comments: ‘Society as a whole is becoming increasingly connected and that means an increasing volume of data is available. This data brings with it many great opportunities, but also raises questions on issues such as privacy and safety of the information. At the end of the day, it’s privacy and safety that matter and it’s in everybody’s interest to apply data science with the utmost of care and within the right framework.’

Besides carrying out joint research, JADS and KPN will also be looking into ways of turning the JADS campus into a living lab in the field of smart city and building technology. This will be done in collaboration with other strategic partners. The creation of a living lab creates the opportunity to test new technologies and to use the campus as showcase for new products and services. Students and KPN employees will be involved in developing smart city experiments and analyzing of acquired data.

About KPN

KPN is an advocate of open innovation with other parties in order to better anticipate on fast changing technological and social developments. KPN stimulates outside-in innovation and aims to promote further growth of the Dutch innovation eco-system. KPN does this through the funding of start-ups, collaborations with such innovative businesses, as well as other parties and knowledge institutes, thereby connecting certain innovation-based themes with each other.
