KPN increases upstream speed of fiber to 1 Gigabit

Good news for homeworkers, gamers, and other intensive internet users, KPN is doubling the fiber upload speed to 1 Gbps. From July 2021, KPN will increase the upstream speed of the 1 Gbps subscription. This will soon make it possible to use the internet symmetrically at the highest speeds, so that users can upload as quickly as they can download. Of course, the downstream speed – to the house – was already 1 Gbps, but uploading was still limited to half of that. Symmetric internet will soon be possible on new and existing 1 Gbps fiber subscriptions.

KPN offers internet speeds of 1 Gigabit per second (1 Gbps) on its fiber network. This speed has gradually become commercially available for a large proportion of households with a fiber connection to the KPN network. This is currently available to approximately 2.5 million addresses and it will apply to almost all KPN fiber connections by the end of 2021. The new upload speed will be available to consumers as well as KPN’s business and wholesale customers.

Thanks to this step, all KPN fiber subscriptions are symmetric, so that customers can upload something just as quickly as they download. This is a unique advantage over internet via the coax cable. “In addition to stability and future-proofing, this is the power of fiber, a balanced communication where sending (uploading) is just as fast as receiving (downloading),” according to Babak Fouladi, KPN Chief Technology and Digital Officer. “We continue to invest in our fiber network to provide the Netherlands with a secure and fast digital network well into the 21st century, and so that it meets future requirements as well.”

With fiber, everyone can use fast internet at home at the same time; video conferences, the highest quality online gaming, and sharing files. As working from the cloud continues to gain popularity, it is important to be able to upload as fast as you can download. The past year and half has made the importance of a good internet clearer than ever. Handy if one person wants to enjoy high-quality streaming and someone else wants to game online. Fiber offers the most stable internet connection with the fewest disruptions. We use the connection not only for streaming, but also, increasingly, for things like sending very large files. This places ever greater demands on the internet connection. Fiber is the best solution for fast internet for now and in the future. KPN is engaged in a large-scale operation to replace its copper network with fiber throughout the Netherlands. The counter now stands at more than three million connections.
