International recognition for KPN's sustainability approach

Making impact on sustainability together with customers and partners

In 2020 KPN is once again on the A list of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP). This is a fine accolade, making KPN one of the global climate leaders that are actively reducing CO2 emissions in their business, for customers and with partners.

Joost Farwerck, KPN CEO: “In 2020, large numbers of people in the Netherlands have been working from home. The reduction in the number of kilometers driven has resulted in a fall in CO₂ emissions. Never before have we seen so clearly the positive effect of digitization on sustainability. We at KPN continue making progress in making our company and our products and services even more sustainable. And we are not letting up. Companies have a key role to play in making the society more sustainable. At KPN we are raising the bar ever higher: we aim to become a virtually circular company in 2025. Only in conjunction with our customers and suppliers can we take on the challenge of combating climate change.”

TV receivers, dike monitoring, smart meters and extra energy storage
The results of the CDP report are based on elements such as energy consumption and reduction targets. Measurements are being made of how organizations are combating CO2 emissions and climate change and what opportunities they see for developing products and services to help customers in that respect. KPN has introduced a new TV receiver with a recycled plastic casing and a power save mode. 5G and IoT innovations are being used to monitor dikes alongside rivers, to reduce the need for agricultural pesticides and to measure the air quality in schools.

KPN’s target is to use renewable energy as efficiently as possible. One notable example is the pilot scheme involving a back-up battery in a local switch in Amersfoort so the use of green power is being optimized and is also available at times when there is no wind and sun to generate energy.

About CDP
For the past 20 years CDP has been bringing investors, companies and cities together and getting them to report on climate change in a transparent manner. This relates both to reducing the negative impact of energy consumption and – in conjunction with customers and partners – to developing products and services to make the chain more sustainable.

In 2020 more than 9,600 companies issued data on environmental effects to 515 investors via the CDP platform. This year 3% (270) of these companies, including KPN, are on the CDP Climate Change A List. As well as KPN, seven international telecom companies and seven other Dutch companies on the A list. KPN has been highly placed in CDP report for the last ten years, achieving A status in seven of them. Recently KPN was proclaimed one of the world’s most sustainable telecom companies in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
