KPN and Samsung bring Rijksmuseum artworks up close via smartphone

Summary

Today, KPN and Samsung launch an exclusive partnership to make Dutch masterpieces in the Rijksmuseum collection accessible via smartphone.

Customers that take out a subscription with KPN, lead sponsor of the Rijksmuseum, on the Galaxy S9(+) or Note9 get their own smart cover showing Rembrandt’s world-famous Night Watch. This gives them direct access to the digital art collection of the Rijksmuseum and the possibility of visiting the museum free of charge.

When the smart cover is placed on the phone, the design of the smartphone changes into the style of well-known artworks in the Rijksmuseum. At the same time, the Rijks App is installed on the smartphone; it contains Rijksstudio, the online catalog of the museum, and customers can choose from among 600,000 artworks from the Rijksmuseum collection as the home screen wallpaper on their smartphone. Moreover, the images of the masterpieces can be used free of rights.

Customers can use the Rijks App to discover the museum through unique multimedia tours. For instance, they can listen to information about Rijksmuseum artworks and can learn about history and about the building. The navigation system guides the visitor with an interactive ground plan with routes that can be followed from one room to another. Thanks to the partnership between KPN and Samsung the vast Rijksmuseum collection is accessible via the smartphone and even more people can enjoy the masterpieces.
